Analysis Of Sarah M. Evans Article, Sons Daughters And...
The 1960s is an era notorious for its rights movements; a decade of chaos and eventually, one of change. One of the rights movements that occurred in the 60s was Second-Wave Feminism and despite it beginning towards the end of the decade and continuing well into the seventies, it still had a prominent impact on the counter-culture of the 60s. In Sarah M. Evans article ââ¬Å"Sons, Daughters and Patriarchy: Gender and the 1968 Generation,â⬠Evans focuses primarily on the year 1968 and analyses the international gender norm crisis that occurred in both sexes, male and female. In doing so, Evans successfully convinces her audience that 1968 was the year that gender dynamics was globally revolutionized. Evans arranges her article chronologically so that her audience has the best possible understanding of the year 1968. She begins with the events leading up to ââ¬Ë68, which was the young menââ¬â¢s fight against traditional masculinity and how their emphasis on personal liberation eventually fueled women to search for their own sexual freedoms in ââ¬â¢68 and the years after. She shows her audience the progression of young womenââ¬â¢s feelings and how over the course of the year, they got more and more angered by the gender hierarchy made and practiced by young men. Evans starts off by claiming that the youth of 1968 were all fighting gender insurgency; no matter how different the goals of each sex, their outcomes all fell under one category: anti-patriarchy. According to Evans, young males challenged

The Beijing Bureau of Statistics said employed people in Chinaââ¬â¢s capital worked for 5. 9 days, or 47. 2 hours, a week on average (Xinhua News Agency, 2006). An online survey of 15,000 people from a well-known Chinese job-hunting website shows a shocking figure that over 40% of the respondents worked vertime without paid. An incredible reality from Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions reported that more than 50% of Hong Kong women who have full-time jobs work overtime at least two hours every day. Why do Chinese people work overtime become an ordinary phenomenon? How do they feel about working overtime? How do Chinese feel about having to work overtime? Do they feel happy? Full-time contract employee accounts for 72. 8%, and the part-time contract employee takes up12. 4 percentage in this company mostly in banqueting and Essence restaurant and the trainees occupy 14. 8 percentages. The company is a newly opened hotel, and the executive building was just partly open in April, 2012. The biggest problem of the Human Resource Department is the talent gap. In order to attract more new interviewees, every Wednesday is the company Open day and people can go to the Human Resource department to hand in their CVs without an appointment. Through the monthly employee party, it can be seen that there are always new staffs join in the Hilton family. As the information shared from the HR assistant manager, the staff turn over of year 2011 was 13. 1%, it is higher than the average hotel staff turn over rate which is 10% in Shanghai (Fang Xu, 2010). The turn over of head office employees in this company is also very high, during the period of the authorââ¬â¢s internship, the General Manager, Director of Finance, Director of the operation, Director of business development, F;B manager, Front Office Manager, three Duty managers played job-hopping to another company. There are 11 levels accounted in Hilton, such as GM is the highest level which is 11 and trainee is level one. The salary of the trainee is 1,000RMB, around 120 per month. The biggest employee amount is level three, the average salary is 2,800RMB (=â⠬346) per month, supervisors are at level 5 which can own 3,400RMB (=â⠬419. ) per month. As an example gave within duty managers, the salary of foreignerââ¬â¢ is three times than the Chinese employee in the same level position. A following SWOT analysis table shows an overall idea of the companyââ¬â¢s both internal and external conditions. The internal part includes Strengths and Weaknesses. The Strengths are more focuses on the company facilities and around the environment. For instance, the golf court is a big strong point of Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao, which is just in a walking distance. The weaknesses are mostly from the guest complains. For example, the 80RMB of parking fee is a big guest complains in this company and it happens almost everyday. Three separated buildings are a weak point because it is very complicated for the guests to find the direction. The service quality is a frequent criticism object from customers. The external part is focused on the financial environment and competitors. Shanghai attracts 215 million domestic tourists and 8. 5 million foreign tourists in 2010. In addition, tourism revenue of Shanghai in 2010 is 305. 3 billion RMB (Shanghai tourist development report, 2012). There are 44 five-star hotels and 64 four-star hotels in Shanghai and 11 five-star and 7 boutique hotels are building up. Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao won the ââ¬ËTop Sellerââ¬â¢ in September 2012 in Asia Pacific area. The company has a lot of opportunities and it is a great time, but also it is facing with various challenges. Table 1. Chapter 2. Project Exploration During a period of 10 months, it turned out that it apparently it was difficult for employees to finish their tasks within the required time resulting in having to work over time. In hotel operation departments, there are three shifts, in general, morning shift staffs working from 7am till 3pm, the afternoon shift from 3pm till 11pm, and the rest hours are evening shift. However, most of the employees in Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao will spend quite long time in the shift turnover period, and it leads directly to work overtime in everyday and in every department. Furthermore, these over hours will not be counted into paid overtime working. Front office is not the only department, but it apparently most frequently in the company. Moreover, as it was written in the previous chapter, the turnover rate in Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao is higher than the average rate. Especially in front desk department, since 2011 November till 2012 September there were 5 employees quitted their job who had worked there over one year and 9 trainees had not worked over 6 months which means they quit before they became a formal staff. It be seen through the first two sentences written in the introductory chapter that working overtime is very normal in China and the reality shows it is a truth in Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao. This project is trying to identify the relationship between working overtime and job satisfaction, and enhance to give the managers of Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao a further consideration of monitoring overtime working and improving employee satisfaction. Meanwhile, job satisfaction is a source of long-term competitive advantage in the hospitality industry, by the core values of Hilton Worldwide which is described as Hospitality, Integrity, Leadership, Teamwork, Ownership and Now, each values have a strong connection with job satisfaction. For the Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao, this management project could be a helpful way to get more involved into employee satisfaction and measuring overtime working as well. Chapter 3. Literature Review This chapter concentrates in working overtime and job satisfaction. Figure has an intuitive feeling to compare the different hours of working overtime in different places, so the first paragraph research figures to give an overview of working overtime in selected places and according to law and compare with Chinaââ¬â¢s situation. The following two paragraphs are in an attempt to find out who works overtime, and the reasons of people work overtime. Furthermore, the job satisfaction of different genders, the importance of job satisfaction and the relationship between job satisfaction and overtime working will be reviewed in the last paragraph. Last but not least a conceptual model covers the main point which includes the literature review. 3. 1 Working overtime In this part, the definition of working overtime is given, and some figures of overtime hours in different countries and a table of standard and maximum working hours for comparison. Working overtime is normally approved in advance by the Head of Department and is agreed in order to complete work for a deadline or to meet additional demands. However, the initial periods of less than half an hour are not classified as work overtime. Additional hours or overtime will not qualify for payments until the member of staff has worked to their number of basic contractual weekly hours (Working additional hours and overtime, 2011). Pascal and Damien (2000) found that about 20% of European employees work 45 or more hours a week, and about 13% of the full-time employeeââ¬â¢s weekly work over 50 hours. Long work hours are also a common phenomenon in the United States: more than 1/4 of US men and 11% of women work more than 50 hours a week (Jacobs ; Gerson, 2004). In addition, extreme overtime work is pervasive in Korea and Japan where many employees work more than 60 hours a week (Amagasa, Nakayama, ; Takahashi, 2005). A reach showed that there are only 13. 7 percent worked for no more than eight hours a day in China, 40. 3% worked eight to nine hours, 23. 48 percent put in nine to 10 hours a day and 22. 0 percent worked more than 10 hours (Xinhua News Agency, 2006). In generally overtime work is a common phenomenon in both Asian and Western countries. Working overtime also occurs in developed countries both in Asia and Western. Moreover, China has the most numbers of populations who work over 8 hours everyday which accounts at 86. 3%. The following figure gives a clear picture of the standard working hours in selected places, and the maximum overtime hours allowed in the law and a lso the overtime pay rate. |Table 2. | | | |Selected places |Standard working |Maximum overtime hours allowed |Overtime pay rate | | |Hours | | | |Finland |8 hours/day |Up to 138 hours within a period of 4 months |1. 5 times of the regular rate of pay for the first two hours | | |40 hours/Week |Up to 250 hours during a calendar year. |2 times for any extra hours. | | |The yearly maximum can be exceeded at 80 hours on a local agreement. | | |France |35 hours /week |Up to 220 hours per year. |Each hour of overtime is payable at 10% to 50% higher than the | | | |This limit may be exceeded with a collective agreement between the employer |regular hourly rate, depending on the cumulative total overtime | | | |and employee. |hours worked. |Ireland |48 hours /week |No specification of legal maximum overtime hours The actual working hours |No statutory obligation on employers to pay employees higher rates | | | |may fluctuate considerably as long as the average working hour per week is |fo r overtime works. | | | |not more than 48 hours over 4, 6 or 12 months (depending on circumstances) | | |Japan |8 hours /day |Up to 2 hours per day for jobs this may cause harm to health. How Shakespeare achieves the comic effects in Act 3, Scene 4, where Malvolio appears cross
How Shakespeare achieves the comic effects in Act 3, Scene 4, where Malvolio appears cross-gartered and in yellow stockings Essay By act 3, scene 4 the audience is familiar with the characters and the audience is also aware of the plot to trick Malvolio. They are therefore looking forward to being entertained. There is further amusement at the end of the scene when Sir Toby arranges a duel between Cesario and Sir Andrew. All of the characters play a part in the comic effect of the scene. The characters work with each other and set up joke, contributing to the comical effect of the scene. Shakespeare starts building up the comic effects early in the play. Malvolio is written as a Puritanical character that is despised by most of the other characters. The audience is prepared to laugh at Malvolios expense, as in Act 1, Scene 5, when Olivia says: O, you are sick of self-love, Malvolio, and taste with a distempered appetite. This is further built on in Act 2, Scene 3, when Malvolio addresses Sir Toby and his friends: My masters are you mad? Or what are you? In Elizabethan times, servants would not address their superiors in this manner. This can be interpreted as Malvolios disrespect for his superiors and his distempered view of these figures that do not match up to his ideals. The way Malvolio scorns Sir Toby makes the audience dislike Malvolio and side with Sir Toby and his companions when Maria comes up with the idea to trick Malvolio. Furthermore, when Malvolio enters in Act 2 Scene 5 he says, Tis but fortune; all is fortune. Maria once told me; and I have heard herself thus near that, should she fancy, I be one of my complexion. Sir Toby and friends, listen to his vanity to in disgust. In this he demonstrates how important he thinks he is. He is also fantasising about power, in particular, the power he would gain were he to marry Olivia. This speech makes the audience empathise with Sir Toby and they see that Malvolio is not a charismatic or likeable person. This further prepares them for his downfall. The letter itself is the final preparation, as it instantly fools Malvolio into thinking Olivia loves him. The audience is now prepared for the next scene. They look forward to what is going to happen. Near the opening of Act 3, Scene 4, Olivia says to Maria, Where is Malvolio? He is sad and civil. The audience knows what is about to happen, so when Malvolio walks in wearing ridiculous yellow stockings that are cross-gartered it has many comical effects, as it is so out of character. Olivia has sent for him, as he is sad and civil, but when he appears smiling wearing yellow stockings, which have been cross gartered, he is not quiet and subdued as she wishes. Furthermore, he goes on to misinterpret Olivia, when she says, Wilt thou go to bed, Malvolio. He misinterprets it as an invitation whereas in reality, it is a comment of concern, so it is comical as he was sent for, as he was sad and civil, but when he appears he is neither. Finally, from Maria, it is learned earlier in the play that Olivia hates the colour yellow, so this also adds to the humour. Olivia sends for Sir Toby to come and look after Malvolio, as she believes him to be mad. Before Sir Toby arrives, Malvolio has a soliloquy, where he is convincing himself that Olivia loves him. He picks up every detail that concurs with his view and interprets them as good signs. .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 , .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .postImageUrl , .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 , .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5:hover , .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5:visited , .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5:active { border:0!important; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5:active , .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5 .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5105a6f7db5cfa6a944f100d8f1890b5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Who is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? EssayO, ho, do you come near me now? No worse man than Sir Toby to look to me? This concurs directly with the letter: she sends him on purpose, that I may appear stubborn to him; for she incites me to be that in the letter. He takes further proof that Olivia loves him when she refers to him as fellow, And when she went away now, Let this fellow be looked to. Fellow not Malvolio nor after my degree but fellow. He believes that when Olivia referred to him as fellow, it showed her warmth towards him even though she was just speaking casually of him. The audience will be laughing at Malvolios ignorance to the plot and also his delusions of grandeur and his vanity, He thinks that it is a test for him that Olivia has sent for Sir Toby to look after him. He thinks she has given Sir Toby to him so he can exercise his new power. As this is not the case, Sir Toby and his companions imprison Malvolio, pretending that he has been possessed by the devil. No, I warrant you, he will not hear of godliness. Sir Toby knows exactly what is happening and knows that Malvolio is not mad or possessed. Sir Toby is imprisoning Malvolio to get his own back. There are also two lines here which get a laugh from an audience, as Fabian says; If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as improbable fiction. This is irony, as it is being played out on a stage, but the audience appreciates the joke Another interesting point is that earlier in the play, when Malvolio was scorning Sir Toby, he accused him of being mad. Now the tables have turned and Malvolio is accused of being mad. Come, well have him in a dark room and bound. My niece is already in the belief that hes mad. Today, this may seem quite a harsh practical joke, but the Elizabethan people were less sympathetic and would have thought that Malvolio got what he deserved. Another comical part in this scene is the duel between Cesario and Sir Andrew. Olivia is in love with Cesario and Sir Andrew wants Olivia to love him. Sir Toby persuades Sir Andrew into challenging Cesario to a duel. Sir Andrew is not very clever and writes a threatening letter to Cesario. Fabian and Sir Toby pretend that the letter is very good, but in reality it is poor. Sir Toby then proceeds to play Sir Andrew and Cesario off against each other. Both duellists are told that the other is a deadly killer. Neither of them is a fighter so neither really wants to fight the other, the audience is amused by this situation. Before the duel commences, Antonio disrupts it. Here there is further comedy as Antonio mistakes Cesario for Sebastian There are references in this play to the Feast of Fools that was around during Shakespeares period. The Feast of Fools was a tradition that took place around Christmas time. For one day, the lowliest or youngest member of a household was placed in charge and given the title of Lord of Misrule Servants gave orders and their masters waited at the table. Ridiculous punishments were awarded and practical jokes were played. The Twelfth Night is full of references to this feast, including the title, The Twelfth Night, which refers to the Twelfth day of Christmas in which the Feast of Fools usually took place. Other references include unjust punishments (imprisoning Malvolio), practical jokes (Tricking Malvolio into thinking Olivia loved him), disguises (Viola disguises herself as Cesario) and fools being allowed to say what they like (Feste). Sir Toby is cast as the Lord of Misrule who orchestrates the practical joke. .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de , .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .postImageUrl , .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de , .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de:hover , .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de:visited , .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de:active { border:0!important; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de:active , .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4a2dfb8bc9ab16ef16c9ff3e9f8395de:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Language Loss - Language Revival EssayMalvolio is made to look stupid for this scene so the comedy is in the contrast with his normal, very solemn, formal self. The way in which the plotting characters react to Malvolio whilst pretending that he is mad is also comical, as they are talking about Malvolio being mad, even though he is not. They are laughing with each other and at Malvolio without arousing his suspicions. The duel is also comical, as Sir Toby and Fabian proceed to play two cowards off against each other. Shakespeare achieves the comic effects by including the audience in the joke, so that they can anticipate the results.

Religious Experience Essays - Vaishnavism, Hindu Denominations
Religious Experience On Wednesday, March 29, 2000 my friendand I attended the Morning Prayer service at the Hare Krishna Farm. The worship began at 7:15 A.M and lasted until 8:45 A.M. Breakfast then followed. At the Hare Krishna Farm wemet Indulekha Devi dasi who explained to us many aspects of their worship. The temple room itself was very impressive. On one side of the temple was a statue of Srila Prabhubada, the spiritual master who brought the Hare Krishna movement to the West. On the opposite side, there was a very big altar with the Deities. The temple room was filled with pictures representing different incarnations of God. Before entering the temple room, a person has to take off his or her shoes. As soon as they enter the temple room, I noticed that all of the devotees (that is how Hare Krishna members call themselves) bow down. Indulekha explained to us that they are offering obeisance to God and the spiritual master. Some of the devotees knock on the entrance door or ring the bells above the entrance door, letting the Deities in the temple know that they are entering. Women were standing on one side of the room and the men on the other side. Service started at 7:15 with Deity Greeting. The priest blew the conches and the curtains on the altar have opened. The two big statues or Deities have been in the center of the altar. The recorded music was playing. Indulekha explained to us that the same song has played all over the world in Hare Krishna temples at 7:15 am. It was a prayer to God. Music was very melodic and pleasant to the ears. The altar itself seemed to be very opulent. Beautiful flower arrangements were surrounding the Deities. Deities itself were actually wearing a clothes. During the greeting, a ceremony called arati is preformed. The head priest or pujari offered incense, the fire lamp, flower, water and a fan in the circular motions. That has lasted for 10 minutes and at the end of the ceremony pujari has blown conchell again announcing the end of the greeting. The fire lamp has been carried around to each person to touch it. Indulekha told us that that is for purification. After the Deity Greeting devotees have turned towards the statue of Srila Prabhupada. Spiritual master worship service was beginning. Indulekha was telling us that spiritual master has a big importance in Hare Krishna religion. He teaches devotees the Holy Scriptures and in that way brings them closer to God. Therefore each morning they have Guru Puja or worship of Guru. One of the man devotees has started singing a prayer for a spiritual master. He would sing one line and the rest would follow. The similar ceremony that has been preformed for Deity greeting has been preformed for Spiritual Master Worship. Flower, water, incense, lamp and fan have been offered. During the ceremony devotees started dancing. As the ceremony was going on the rhythm has been faster and faster and dancing was lively and lively. Each person would go towards the statue and take a flower petals and circle around the Srila Prabhupada in that way offering their obeisance and gratefulness. As the guru worship ended, all devotees (without stopping singing) turned towards the Deities and started singing Hare Krishna mantra. Indulkeha told us that that is the most important mantra. Followers of the Hare Krishna chant that mantra every day. During the meditation hours they repeat it many times: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. After a dancing and singing has been finished, everyone bowed down and prayers were said. The lecture followed. Lecture has been give by local member of Hare Krishna. He would read a verse from the book called Srimad Bhagavatam. Worse was read in Sanskrit, then translation and purport. Then lecture started. The lecture was about detachment from material body. It is said that material body does not represent us. Material body is just like a dress that we wear, and on the end of the life we leave it. When we take a birth again we choose another dress. As Indulekha told us, morning prayers is usually only for members of Hare Krishna but everyone is welcome. But for people like us they recommend Sunday gathering because philosophy is explained on the more basic level. During the morning prayers, it is more for devotees and therefore for us it may be hard to follow.

Use Conditional Probability to Calculate Intersections
Use Conditional Probability to Calculate Intersections The conditional probability of an event is the probability that an event A occurs given that another event B has already occurred. This type of probability is calculated by restricting the sample space that weââ¬â¢re working with to only the set B. The formula for conditional probability can be rewritten using some basic algebra. Instead of the formula: P(A | B) P(A Ã¢Ë © B) /P( B ), we multiply both sides by P( B ) and obtain the equivalent formula: P(A | B) x P( B) P(A Ã¢Ë © B). We can then use this formula to find the probability that two events occur by using the conditional probability. Use of Formula This version of the formula is most useful when we know the conditional probability of A given B as well as the probability of the event B. If this is the case, then we can calculate the probability of the intersection of A given B by simply multiplying two other probabilities. The probability of the intersection of two events is an important number because it is the probability that both events occur. Examples For our first example, suppose that we know the following values for probabilities: P(A | B) 0.8 and P( B ) 0.5. The probability P(A Ã¢Ë © B) 0.8 x 0.5 0.4. While the above example shows how the formula works, it may not be the most illuminating as to how useful the above formula is. So we will consider another example. There is a high school with 400 students, of which 120 are male and 280 are female. Of the males, 60% are currently enrolled in a mathematics course. Of the females, 80% are currently enrolled in a mathematics course. What is the probability that a randomly selected student is a female who is enrolled in a mathematics course? Here we let F denote the event ââ¬Å"Selected student is a femaleâ⬠and M the event ââ¬Å"Selected student is enrolled in a mathematics course.â⬠We need to determine the probability of the intersection of these two events, or P(M Ã¢Ë © F). The above formula shows us that P(M Ã¢Ë © F) P( M|F ) x P( F ). The probability that a female is selected is P( F ) 280/400 70%. The conditional probability that the student selected is enrolled in a mathematics course, given that a female has been selected is P( M|F ) 80%. We multiply these probabilities together and see that we have an 80% x 70% 56% probability of selecting a female student who is enrolled in a mathematics course. Test for Independence The above formula relating conditional probability and the probability of intersection gives us an easy way to tell if we are dealing with two independent events. Since events A and B are independent if P(A | B) P( A ), it follows from the above formula that events A and B are independent if and only if: P( A ) x P( B ) P(A Ã¢Ë © B) So if we know that P( A ) 0.5, P( B ) 0.6 and P(A Ã¢Ë © B) 0.2, without knowing anything else we can determine that these events are not independent. We know this because P( A ) x P( B ) 0.5 x 0.6 0.3.à This is not the probability of the intersection of A and B.

Show how waves transfer energy Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Show how waves transfer energy - Assignment Example The movement, drift and transmission of waves as an entity between two points results in transfer of energy. For example, in case of the water waves in the oceans and on sea sides, a thrust is felt and water displaces the sand and other elements on the beach side. This is a case of waves transmitting the energy. A wave itself moves in the form of the crest and trough and each has its own altitude and moves through the different frequencies (Giordano, 2012, p. 446). The waves enable producing energy in a specific manner. This includes the concept of potential energy being brought into motion and then converted into the kinetic energy. Kinetic energy within the molecules, particles and object itself enable the excitement of electrons and eventually leads to production of energy. The deterministic variables in terms of waves measurement, intensity and its overall capacity includes elements such as the frequency, the amplitude, and wavelength of the overall waves. Each of these has its own measuring units. For example, in case of the electromagnetic waves, the electric and magnetic waves move along a 90 degree to one another. They come into force as a result of the electric and magnetic field production. They slightly differ from the mechanical waves and they do so on the account of vacuum against the open platform. The mechanical waves on the other hand are slightly different and are relatively subject to the object and material in which they are propagating. Mechanical waves may operate in the liquid as well as the solid state. Another term associated with the movement of waves is that of the refraction and reflection. In case of the electromagnetic waves refraction takes place on account of passing through between a dense to thin medium, reflection is the simple bouncing back of the waves from a particular medium within or against any other medium or object that it comes in touch with. Scottie is having a problem of parenting. She only has one sister whom she admires but the sister Alex is ill mannered. Interestingly, Scottie develops the bad manners that Alex has acquired. In one of the instances in the movie, Scottie is shown dancing provocatively in front of the swimming pool

The Relationship Between Father And Daughter English Literature Essay
The Relationship Between Father And Daughter English Literature Essay In this term paper I will compare two books that I really liked: The lovely bones and The liars club. I decided to write about them, because I believe that both stories are very similar and very well written. I also think that the authors of these books are admirable women who have struggled with life, society and family. For this reason, I consider important to compare the two books. I will start to write about the lovely bones. At the beginning, I did not wan to finish reading the book, because it is a hard story that talks about the raping of a little girl. Therefore, I felt so angry and frustrating. But then I understood that I had to continue reading the book if I wanted to know the meaning of it. The point of view of the lovely bones is first person and it is narrated by Susie Salmon, the girl that was horribly raped and murdered by her neighbor. The entire story is about the grief that the Salmon family is experimenting after Susies death. However, there was a member of the family who suffered the most: Susies father, Jack Salmon. This man loved her daughter so much that when he knew that she was killed, life became a hell for him. As a result, his marriage was very affected and his wife cheated on him. I found a quote that explains the relationship between Susie and her father: His own father had taught him how to build ships in bottles. They were something my mother, sister, and brother couldnt care less about. It was something I adored. The den was full of them. He would call me in whenever he was ready (Sebold, Alice p, 45) Unlike her siblings, Susie enjoyed her fathers hobby. This man loved to build ships in bottles, because his father taught him how to do them. So, he shared this hobby with their children, but the only one who liked and care about it was Susie because she had a very strong relationship with her father. Therefore, when she passed away, his father Jack wanted to die as well. On the other hand, Mary Karr in her book The liars club showed that her relationship with her father was very special and unique. For example, she mentioned that he used to be a very lovely father with her and her sister and that even though he was many years in the war, when he came back home he always wanted to spend time with his family. However, Marys father did not have a good relationship with the rest of the family, because his mother in law did not like him and as a result, his marriage was falling apart. This quote explains the situation he was living: Mother threatened divorce a lot of times, and Daddys response to it was usually a kind of patient eye-rolling. He never spoke of divorce as a n option. If I asked him worried questions about a particularly nasty fight, hed just say I shouldnt talk bad about my mother, as if even suggesting they might split up insulted her somehow (Karr, Mary pa, 35) As we can see, Marys father did not want to get divorce maybe because he wanted to be with her two children. Moreover, he said to Mary that even though he had conflicts with his wife, she had to love her mother no matter what. I think this man showed that he was a good husband and a good father since he always asked Mary to respect her mother. This case is very similar to the conflict that Susies parents had in the book The lovely bones. As we know, when Susie died, all the family struggled with the fact that she was not longer with them. Each of them faced Susies death differently. The father, for example, was obsessed to find the killer, the sister Lindsay did not want to talk about it, the brother was very innocent to realize that her sister had passed away and the mother decided to cheat on her husband to relieve the pain. I said before that Susies father and Marys were similar because both men were married with women that, from my point of view, did not care about their children . Marys mother cared only about herself. She just wanted to have fun and get another husband that is why she went on a trip with his Latin-American boyfriend and left her children. Susies mother did the same thing when she decided to move to another state in order to be alone and deal with her daughters death. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SIBLINGS I believe that in the two books that I decided to compare, the relationship between siblings is one of the most important topics. In this part of my term paper, I will compare Susies relationship with her brother and sister and Mary Karr relationship with her sister Lecia. Susie Salmon had one brother called Buckley and one sister called Lindsay. The tree of them were very closed and cared very much about each other. There is a quote on the book The lovely bones where Susie says that once she saved her brother life. a three-year-old Buckley had swallowed it. Buckley was choking, his body bucking, and I carried him with Nate trailing into the garage, where my fathers precious Mustang sat. I put Buckley in the back and grabbed and grabbed the keys from the unused terra-cotta pots where my father hid them. I sped all the way to the hospital. if the hadnt been there, the doctor later told my mother you would have lost your little boy (Sebold, Alice p, 93,94) As the quote explains, Susie saved her brother because she loved him very much. She also had the courage to do it since many people would not dare to do what Susie did. Susie loved Buckley so much that she did not think about anything but to safe her little brother. Later in the book, this strong connection is demonstrated when in one of the chapters, Buckley said to his dad that Susie touched his cheek and that he felt that Susie was seeing them from heaven. Susie also got along well with her sister Lindsay. Both girls enjoyed being together, not only because they were sister but also because they were the same age. As a result, when Lindsay knew that her sister was dead, she did not want to talk about this tragic event to anybody. For me, it is very understandable the way that Lindsay felt. Some people like her deal with death like by being quite and reserved. Some others share their feelings in order to release their pain. But what really cares is to remember the people who we love. Now, the author of The liars club also had a good relationship with her sister Lecia. These two girls suffered a lot not only because they had many problems in their home, but also because they have an alcoholic mother and a hysterical grandmother. I found a quote that explains how Mary Karr felt strong because of her sister: Lecia and I both behaved like savages at any opportunity. When she was only twelve, Lecia could beat the dogshit out of any neighbor boy up to the age of fifteen. For my part, I can remember standing behind the drainage ditch in our yard cussing Carol Sharp for bloodying my nose (Karr, Mary pa, 40) In this quote, Mary Karr explains that she used to play pranks with her sister and that thought she had problems in home, she tried to forget them by playing with her Lecia. From my point of view, it is very difficult to live you life normally when you know that your family is hurting each other. For this reason, I admired Mary Karr very much, because she tried to forget all her problems. Unfortunately, when you are a child, all these family conflicts affect you and the only thing that you can do about it is to move on with your life just as Mary Karr did. On the other hand, I also believe that she was conscious about her family problems, but she could not do anything about it. I can not imagine what it feels like to live with a family that is full of traumas and that does not care about you. For example, Mary Karrs grand mother was a bitter woman who did not love their grand children and who lived in the past. That is why Mary Karr did not suffer when her grand mother passed away. I nstead, she felt relieved and free. Susie Salmon also had a special grand mother, but unlike Marys she was a good person who loved their grand children very much. This woman was an alcoholic but she took cared of their grand children while her daughter Abigail decided to move to another state. These two women were so different, but as any human being has flaws. Now, in the next pages of my paper I will talk about the role of the mothers in the two books The lovely bones and The liars club THE ROLE OF A MOTHER IN A FAMILY It is well known that a mother represents many important things in a family. She is the one who takes care of her children, because she has a protective instinct that a father does not have. For this reason, it is unbelievable for me to understand why Susies mother abandoned their children in order to forget her dead daughter. I can understand that it is very painful to lose your daughter, but by abandoning your other children you are not going to resolve anything. Now, I also comprehend that as human beings we need to have our space, because is our right. But when you have a family like Susies mother you also have to think about them. Another thing that also surprised me was that Susies mother cheated on her husband. Even now I can not understand what she did. There is a very good quote that explains Abigails attitude according to Susies point of view: Len kissed her forehead hard and closed his eyes. She took his hand and placed it on her breast. She whispered in his ear. I knew what was happening. Her rage, her loss, her despair. The whole life lost tumbling out in an arc on that roof, clogging up her being. She needed Len to drive the dead daughter out (Sebold, Alice p, 152) This woman desired to forget her daughters death by cheating on her husband. She thought that her pain was going to disappear if she transferred all his sorrow in another person, but I think that is not the correct way to resolve our problems. She could have gone to a therapist or talking to her husband about Susies death. Infidelity is something that I can not comprehend. Unfortunately, Abigails infidelity did not bring Susie back. Instead, this deception caused Abigail more pain and more remorse to her life. At the end of the book, we know that Abigail returned with her family because Jack had a heart attack, but we never knew if she stayed again with them or if she decided to be brave enough in order to tell her husband that she had cheated on him with Len Fenerman. In the book The liars club Mary Karr explained that her mother was always worried about herself, just exactly like Susies mother. You might think that I am judging these women very hard, but I just can not understand why they behaved that way with their children. I mean, when you decide to have children is because you know that you have to take care of them, yet there are some mothers that do the opposite thing. Mary Karrs mother for example, tried to be a good mother, but I feel that she had a very hard background that did not allow her to live her life peacefully. Even Mary Karr recognized that when she finished her book, it was very hard for her mother to read it. At the same time, Mary said that she was very supportive when the book was done. Another thing that it was hard to assimilate for Mary and her sister Lecia was live with their stepfather Hector. He constantly had arguments with Marys mother and they did not have a good relationship. There is a quote that explains this situation: Other nights were occupied with Mother and Hector fighting. The litany of his innate low-lifedness got seared into skull during this time. Hector was a pussy, was her main gripe. Also, he lacked gainful employment, which meant Mother accused him of sponging off her all the time. As this quote explains, Marys stepfather did not support his wife economically. Therefore, Marys mother argued with him and had many conflicts. Plus, he was an alcoholic who was worried more about drinking than about taking care of his wife, his house and his stepdaughters. When I think about the problems that Mary had to deal with, I really felt sorry for her. She was only a child when her parents got divorce and when he had to accept a new father figure. I can see Marys life like a quest. During her childhood, she lived so many bad things that made her stronger, but at the same time made her more vulnerable. In order to conclude this term paper in the next to pages, I will talk about the most difficult topic in both books: raping. The reason why I decided to write about it at the end, was because I want to reflect about how raping can change your life. TWO GIRLS WHO LOST THEIR INNOCENCE The books that I decided to compare in this term paper talk about a very hard topic: raping. In the lovely bones, the main character Susie Salmon was horribly raped and killed bi her neighbor Mr. Harvey. This story is fiction, but the author of it was raped in real life. For that reason, she wrote this book. As we know, Susie Salmon was a fourteen year old girl who had a normal life and who wanted to fell in love for the first time. Unfortunately, all of her dreams were destroyed by a disgusting and despicable man named Mr. Harvey. He took away Susies innocence when he raped her. After this, he decided to kill her so she could not accuse him of anything. But Susie was not dead in a one hundred percent, because her spirit went to heaven. She saw her family and her killer from there. She saw all the pain that Mr. Harvey had caused after he killed her. But she also saw that her family got over her death and moved on. Here is a quote in which Susie explains her raping: Mr. Harvey made me lie still underneath him and listen to the beating of his heart and the beating of mine. How mine skipped like a rabbit, and how thudded, a hammer against cloth. We lay there with our bodies touching, and, as I shook, a powerful knowledge took hold. He had done this thing to me and I had lived. (Sebold, Alice p, 14) The only thing that I can say about this quote is that I can not imagine what this girl felt in that moment. For me, it is very difficult to understand how these criminals can exist. I mean, this man took advantage of a child who was not big or strong enough to defend herself. Killing a person is horrible, but killing a kid who is weak and innocent is the most despicable act in the world. From my point of view, Mr. Harvey was a scum of the earth who did not deserve to be alive, because she also killed other children. All of them were girls that had a life, dreams and hopes for the future. But this killer ruined their lives and left sorrow in their families. Finally, in the book The Liars club Mary Karr narrates that she was raped, when she was a little girl. This event changed her life and her perspective about the world. The quote says: He pulled me off my shorts and underwear and threw them in the corner in a ball, over where I knew there could be spiders. He pushed down his pants and put my hand on his thing, which was unlike any of the boys joke about hot dogs and garden hoses. It was hard as wood and felt big around and felt big around as my arm. He wrapped both my hands around it, and showed me how to slide them up and down (Karr, Mary p, 66) When I read this fragment of the book, I really felt so angry and frustrated. I can to imagine the desperation that Mary Karr experimented. She as Alice Sebold experienced how it felt to be raped and humiliated by a man. But at the same time this horrible experience made them successful and brave. So, my conclusion for this term paper is the following: every person forms his character based on his personal experiences. As a consequence, in life we can follow two paths: the one that is related with hate, vengeance and sadness and the one that is connected with love, success and hopes. I believe that the authors of the books that I compared follow the second path, because they decided to heal their emotional wounds in order to move on. That is a lesson that all human beings should learn. Nobody said that life is easy. Nobody said that life is pink color. However, god made us strong to achieve any objective that we have. He made us intelligent to understand that life is something that id full of bad and good moments. For this reason, these two authors, Alice Sebold and Mari Karr succeed when they decided to tell their stories to the world. They had a lot of pain in their lives, but they also decided to cure their traumas to move on and have a good life.

Cyberpunk and Science Fiction Essay -- Cyberpunk Computers Technology
Cyberpunk and Science Fiction Science fiction can be defined as a method of story telling that steps outside of the box of life as we know it and into the realm of the impossible. Science fiction works are often designed to be only truthful in the eyes of the author and the reader. However, there are times when either a science fiction work parallels closely to the future of our world and therefore becomes a possibility or life pursues a science fiction-like ideal making the quest heroic in itself. The latter of the two can describe the viewpoint of our growing cyberpunk culture and its belief that technology is the end no matter what means be. The stories in the book Cyberpunk seems to focus on the life of a hacker. The book follows the life events and trends that a hacker typically goes through. Individuals who are impressed by technology often become wrapped into a technological advancement such as the computer or telephone, and become engulfed in curiosity. However, at this point, these individuals are nothing more than a target market for the product. They not only test the power that comes from understanding what they have in their hands, they become obsessed with it, and even begin to abuse it. Now the person has crossed the line of a fan of a product and entered the realm of hackers. In well-known cases, the individuals who manipulate todays technology for personal gain or pleasure can be related to the villains in science fiction works. Todays hackers are the new generation of pioneers whom we fear because their knowledge gives them control over us. They rationalize their abuse and control over us for the good of t echnology and feel little or no remorse for any such unscrupulous actions. In most cyberpunk nov... ... with an ultimatum, villains would surely choose their evil profession over a life full of love and emotions. The world of science fiction is just a fantasized portrayal of our non-fictitious world of today. However, there is a significant relation among the innovators of our world and the inhabitants of the science fiction world. Their mentalities are equal; their intentions similar; their idea of a new world realized. One fears what one fails to understand, and there will always be those who test others fears. These are the characters of the science fiction novels; these are the characters of the world we live in. Works Cited Markoff, John and Hafner, Katie. Causes of Teen Pregnancy
Causes of Teen Pregnancy Lack of sex education is the most important but not the only cause of teenage pregnancy. Following are some other teenage pregnancy causes that can not be ignored. First is the psychological factors. The immature and irresponsible behavior arising due to complex teenage psychology is another important cause of teenage pregnancies. Teenagers often go through a number of emotions because of their own transition from childhood and peer pressure. In addition, weak family relationships fail to provide the emotional support that teenagers require. This lack of attention and affection from family resulting in depression forces them to seek love and support from other people, especially members of the opposite sex. The next cause of teen pregnancy is the adolescent sexual behavior. As adolescence marks the onset of sexual maturity, it is but obvious that both the sexes show interest in and explore the much hyped topics of sex, thank to the irresponsible and careless a pproach of mass media. This makes them vulnerable to teenage sex and pregnancy without adequate sex education.Lack of sexual education causes teens to get abortions as they ultimately realize their inability to bear the responsibilities of being a parent at such a young age. The another cause is lack of discipline and control. Factors like alcohol and substance abuse accompanied by unrestricted interaction with the opposite sex can ignite the sparks of lust and passion in youngsters very easily ultimately leading to teenage pregnancy. Nonetheless, at times, parents put too many restrictions of their children, especially girls to protect them from dangers. This overprotection gives rise to frustration and a feeling of not being loved and cared for. Thus, balance is the key to avoid this problem. Moreover, sexual abuse of teenage girls is also one of the most disgraceful causes of teenage pregnancy. Sexual relationships between teenage girls and older men are more likely to end up in t eenage pregnancy as compared to sexual relationships between teenage boys and girls. Last but not least is the socio-economic factors. Childhood environment, lower educational and income levels have also been associated with high rates of teenage pregnancy because of negligence towards birth control methods.

Stranger than Paradise essays
Stranger than Paradise essays This movie could be considered a complete waste of time for many people. The movie is in black and white. This affects the surroundings in the movie. New York, Cleveland, and Florida look dark and dreary. This inhibits the characters, in their emotions. Throughout the movie there is a lot of silence, and tension between Eva and Willie. I relate the black and white theme in this movie to color theory. Black and white are opposite ends of the value scale, or color sphere. These two are highly contrasting colors, which cause strain and tension when together. This could explain Eva and Willie. Eva, who seems to be better alone, unlike Willie who has to have his friend Eddie. These two characters cause tension when put together. Eva feels confined when put into the prison-like situations that Willie puts her in. For example, being left alone in apartments, and hotels by herself. These two characters together cause the same contrasting effects of the two colors black and whit e. This film begins with Eva arriving in New York to stay with her cousin Willie. Willie lives by himself in an unkempt apartment. Eva arrives to Willies place, but Willie does not really make her feel welcome. He feels like he has to be some sort of babysitter. Eva is left in the apartment by herself feeling lonely and bored. One day she leaves the apartment and goes to the store. When she returns she shows Willie what she shoplifted. Willie is impressed that Eva did this sort of crime in the unsafe neighborhood that he lives in. Throughout the time she spends in New York Eva stays bored and lonely while Willie stays content with his friend Eddie. I believe Eddie is Willies only friend. Willie and Eddie tend to spend much of their time gambling. Eddie seems to be a very nice guy who shows some interest in Eva. Evas time in New York comes to an end, and she is leaving for Cleveland. She seems to be ...

The New Changes in the Structure and Administration of the Business Research Paper - 68
The New Changes in the Structure and Administration of the Business - Research Paper Example The merging of the three businesses in the UK has strained the managersââ¬â¢ efforts towards establishing an effective workforce body. With the new structure, some of the employees have to be retrenched since tasks have been redistributed. In addition, the number of departments has been reduced significantly. Before the merge, each business had an established structure of various departments and offices. In addition, the three businesses had varied categories of employees in the various established departments. However, after the merger, the operations of the three business were brought together under one management. Some departments were merged, and others eliminated in the new system. Due to the reduced number of departments, a huge number of employees have been retrenched, and others given lower positions than the ones they held in their previous respective business settings. In this regard, it can be observed that the new structure of the human resource has led to the loss of jobs and decline in earnings for some employees. The new structure of the UMGUK requires employees to work together with an aim to boost performance. Adjusting to the new system is a challenging HR issue that the company faces. The employees of UMGUK are not used to the new system and, therefore, the company cannot realize the benefits of the new structure fully in the first phase of implementation. In this regard, the HR department is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that the employees get acquainted with the new system with the shortest time possible.

Read intructions - Essay Example Racial slurs can actually become a source of empowering the victimized individuals and groups. They can learn to value their individuality and their peculiar characteristics that differentiate them from others. By valuing their culture and norms, they can perhaps make others see that they might be different and unique, but in no way inferior or outcasts. It is therefore important to understand that it is up to the person who hears the word to make out positive or negative connotations. Optimism always helps- especially if one is surrounded by difficulties and hatred. It is not until a person realizes that his/her survival is at stake, when he/she decides either to face it or to give up. Those who face it are empowered by racial slurs, while those who give up get internally racist. Self examination and education have been the main factors of changing the mindset of the Black and Chink communities, which in turn changed the mentality of the oppressive communities. Education has changed the life style and the social status of the Blacks and Chinks. The contemporary society of US has to a great extent accepted the abilities of such communities who were victims of racism who have struggled to make a respectable place in the educational institutions, white collar professions and the main stream work force. Hence, they are accepted in the educational institutions and in all white collar professions, and respected for their hard work and courage to stand up to the racist slurs barked at them. This was however, not the case a few decades ago, when the oppressed communities had limited scope and horizon to take part as respectable or equal human beings in the betterment of the society. A Black US president demonstrates the evolution of the thinking pattern of the American people. It is one example how the oppressed communities derived strength from the

Drugs trafficking in the US Mexico border Essay Example for Free
Drugs trafficking in the US Mexico border Essay There has been an argument about drugs trafficking in the US Mexico border. It has been said that with effective and sustained financial aid from US, Mexico should be able to dramatically reduce drug trafficking and the violence it generates. I disagree with this idea because the origin and history of drug trafficking along the US-Mexico border indicates that not only Mexico is responsible but USA is also responsible for drug trafficking. Though US financial aid may help to reduce some of the problem, it cannot decrease demands and consumption of drug in USA and Mexico and in turn reduce drug trafficking. I believe strongly that the root cause of drug problem in Mexico- USA border is insatiable demand and consumption by the US population. à à à à à à à à à à à The drug trafficking laws (Dunn T.J., 1996) had their source in smuggling of various narcotics in the end of 19th and early part of the 20th century. At this time, US joined a dozen other nations to sign up the Opium International Convention as opium was the only drug that was used mostly. Mexico also ratified this decision. Later in 1914, US altered the law so that it could start charging tax on opium and its derivatives. The new act was called Harrison Narcotic Act. Anybody found in illegal possession of opium and its derivatives was charged by the federal government. USA stepped its efforts to curb illegal possession of opium by declaring that addicts of narcotics could not be prescribed with drugs. This forced these addicts to start operating black markets in order to get these drugs. Here we can see clearly this high demand by addicts and opium consumption in US led to drug trafficking. à à à à à à à à à à à To take advantage of the new market in US, Mexicans, Chinese and European Americans started operating along the borders in rings, partnership or in gangs. This led to an increase in the role of Mexican cities as centers of these businesses. It is the demand that led the smugglers, border bootleggers and traffickers to increase their efforts along the border. In 1959s due to the effects of opium usage and social problems, various narcotic acts were passed like Boggs act of 1951 and the narcotic act of 1956. They were meant to give police and prosecutors powers to deal with the increasing number of drug users. By this time Mexico had taken a firm stand against opium but the laws became ineffective due to the high demand for drugs by the consumers which guaranteed ready market to the supplies. Therefore, the root cause of these drugs is the high demand and the ready market was available. à à à à à à à à à à à The proliferation of drug use and trafficking in US (Dunn T.J., 1996) was because of USA unrealistic policies about drug abuse. USA drug war budget in 2005 was 20 billion dollars while in 1981 it was 2 billion dollars. Mexico has accused by USA of increased drug trafficking smuggling and usage. This is attributed to the heavy investment it has and increased militarization in the border. USA felt that Mexico was not doing enough to fight against drug abuse. They hoped that if trade and tourism was interrupted along the border, then Mexico would feel the pinch because there would be fewer customers. They accused Mexico of failing to fight drugs. They tightened their borders so that Mexico would change its position on conflicts in Central America as well as in other foreign policies. Mexico did not welcome this idea but continued pursuing its independent policies and harshly criticized USA for its failure to address the main causes of the drug problems. These are the insatiable demand for drugs and high consumption in the USA. à à à à à à à à à à à In Mexico, due to the lack of enough funds and training of police forces and the weakness of the judicial system, criminals who arm themselves with crude weapons know that there is no chance of them being caught and punished. There have been cases where the perpetrators wear police uniforms and drive vehicles that resembled those of the police casting doubts whether police were not involved in the crime (Dunn T.J., 1996) à à à à à à à à à à à USA has been issuing warnings to Mexico through its emissary in Mexico blaming it for not working hard enough to end the state of lawlessness. The Mexico government rejected this and accused them of fostering this state of lawlessness. à à à à à à à à à à à Mexico called upon both governments to work constructively in combating the crime. The US government was accused of its failure to control dangerous weapons which are used. For these reasons, Mexico should not be blamed alone for its failure to control these drug businesses. à à à à à à à à à à à Effective and sustained financial assistance from US cannot fully help to reduce drug trafficking and violence that it generates but still it can help. For example if it is provided, more policemen could be trained and put along the borderline where this illegal business takes place. They would be able to control the flow of illegal arms that are used by these drug dealers. It is also true that people whose per capital income is very low and their health and social problems are increasing daily are the ones who deal with drugs. So if US could offer financial aid could be channeled to this end. I think drug business would drop significantly though not completely. No matter how much aid US government can channel, the problem cannot be solved because the root causes are not addressed. These are demand and consumption, business thrives because where there are many consumers hence high demand. à à à à à à à à à à à For the fight against drug to be effective, both government should stop blaming each other and work on modalities to solve this problem for once and for all. The Mexican government should take a firm stand on these drug dealers just like USA. Also, US should stop blaming Mexico and address the conditions that are favoring this drug business. à à Reference: Dunn T.J., 1996. The Use of Helicopters for the Primary Purpose of Air Ambulances in Wor
Introduction In this paper we will discuss the first documented use of helicopters for the primary purpose of Air Ambulances in World War II. During 1943, the United States, British Commonwealth and the Chinese faced the armies of Japan, Thailand and Indian National Army. The Burmese Independent Army started off on the Japanese side, but later switched sides fighting with the allied forces. Under the control of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the United States made a decision to support the Chinese during the war with aircraft.1 With Japan controlling much of the Chinese territory, the main supply route for the Chinese was thru the Burma Road. This supply route was essential to operations in the area shaped a restructure for the way supplies would be delivered to soldiers fighting and patients being able to get the urgent care they extremely needed. The only logical and expeditious way to do all of this would be through the use of aircraft flying a supply route known as ââ¬Å"the Hump.â⬠2 History Commanders from all units across the world have thought about how to take care of their troops in times of war. Maybe one of the most heavily weighed thoughts is how much risk I am willing to take if I canââ¬â¢t provide my men immediate medical care at the time when they most need it. Dated back as far as 1866, the idea of an ââ¬Å"Air Ambulanceâ⬠has been on the minds of certain individuals across the world. Paris, France first used the hot air balloons in order to evacuate more than 160 soldiers from the besieged city to medical care facilities.3 In the beginning, using a hot air balloon to rescue shipwrecked sailors seemed logical since the balloons where already delivering mail and supplies across the area of operations. John Gibbons Truth in Action :: John Gibbons Truth Action Essays
John Gibbons' "Truth in Action" ABSTRACT: John Gibbons tries to show that the notion of similarities and differences between different cases of events reveals the relevance of relational properties, which are of causal relevance. Based on such considerations, Gibbons' main claim is that the truth value somebody assigns to his or her beliefs has causal power. This means that the deflationary theory of truth becomes false. The questions therefore are: (1) What are the similarities and differences between different cases? (2) What kind of properties are relational properties? (3) What is the causal relevance of such relational properties, and why should the truth value be of causal relevance? (4) Why can Gibbons not show that the truth value has the relevant causal power? On the basis of some examples John Gibbons tries to show that the notion of similarities and differences between different cases of events reveals the relevance of relational properties, which are of causal relevance. Based on such considerations Gibbons' main claim is that the truth value somebody assigns to his beliefs has causal power. And so the deflationary theory of truth becomes false. So, the questions are: what are (i) similarities and differences between different cases, (ii) what kind of properties are relational properties, and (iii) what is the causal relevance of such relational properties, and why should the truth value be of causal relevance? (iv) Why Gibbons cannot show that the truth value has the relevant causal power? (i) What are similarities and differences between different cases? Gibbons assumes events (1) to speak about cases of particular actions and of particular physical states of affairs, however, he does not distinguish them, he simply speaks in both cases about behavior and their causes or about behavioral events. The example of behavioral events E1 and E2 Gibbons uses is the following: The pure actions A are: A1 Marcia stopped at the red light. A2 Greg stopped at the red light. The action for achieving A: (2) AA1 squeezing a lever with the right hand AA2 pressing a pedal with the foot Additional features of A: af1 cast a shadow in my direction ??? af2 ??? (3) The aim of action A is: aiml wanted to avoid getting a ticket. aim2 wanted to avoid getting a ticket.

Advanced Management
There is no ambiguity in saying that advanced management is a plan, ploy, position, pattern and perspective as it balances internal progressions of organizations with external factors. The overall strategic management of organizations is indivisible from strategic management of relationships, usually the accountability of the public relations or communication department.Strategic management rivets taking decisions and actions that resolve long-term organizational performance. The process comprises strategy formulation, completion, appraisal, and control. It underlines monitoring and assessing environmentally generated opportunities and restraints in light of organizational strengths and weaknesses.Essentially, advanced management is a vehicle for giving forward-looking leadership concerning the most essential issues of concern to an organization and its surroundings in a very determined, efficient, and valuable manner. At the heart of the progression is ââ¬Å"the communal management of a strategic agenda that transforms as an organization's problems and opportunities transform. Effective advanced management is a core form of strategic management needs intensive, continuous, and collective concern of senior managementâ⬠(Eadie and Stein bacher, 1985, p 425).The purpose of strategic management is to help formulate, implement, and evaluate cross-functional decisions in such a way as to assist the organization in achieving its long-term objectives. The strategic management process is seen as ââ¬Å"an objective, logical and systematic approach for making major decisions in an organizationâ⬠(David, 1997: 6) in which both analysis and intuition have a role to play.Another accepted perspective (Pearce and Robinson, 1997) emphasizes information flows through interrelated stages of analysis. It implies:The interconnectedness of all process components; The sequential character of strategy formulation and implementation; The necessity of ongoing feedback to asses s the success of strategies as they are implemented; The need to regard strategic management as a dynamic system (components of the process are constantly evolving; formal planning must ââ¬Å"freezeâ⬠them to achieve its aims).http://www.ic.polyu.edu.hk/esh/KB/management_strategic/Koch(1999).pdf.Advanced management entails the configuration of a strategic management group to give leadership for the process. Characteristically, the framework of this group will comprise the C.E.O., top-line managers, and key executive staff members. In a small organization, for example, the strategic management group might comprise the mayor or the city manager and the heads of numerous operating departments. It is the responsibility of the advanced management team to give the configuration for developing and modernizing strategic plans and for guiding their realization in all areas. As advanced management is a continuous process, the strategic management group must meet on a usual basis to confer strategies, monitor development, evaluate efficiency, and generally sustain a shared focus on the strategic agenda. This comprises identifying newly promising strategic issues, estimate problems and opportunities as they develop, adapting strategies, and giving direction and control over completion plans to preceding the strategic agenda efficiently. Sporadically, it may consequence in the development of new strategic initiatives. The business environment has transformed drastically since the advent of internet. Business organizations have undertaken extreme restructuring by modifying their means of communication and synchronization of work activities. Internet has made it promise for companies to work on a real-time basis, whereby products and services are conveyed to the right place at the right time.Since then, internet has propagated and has undergone significant improvements. Costs have sustained to decline as these new technologies have emerged. A business not supported by a ne twork of computer systems (primary information technology) is more or less destined to fail, since it will be incapable to compete efficiently in today's complex and dynamic environment.Companies are not the only ones who have gained from advances in modern information technology. Consumers and interest groups have created strategic alliances and now capable to coordinate their activities as well as exchange ideas and thoughts through a number of database and network systems. For instance, owners of personal computers can subscribe to a computer network and without difficulty retrieve information on the products and corporations on line. Such information can also without problems be transmitted to other users. This huge use of internet by both consumers and companies affects, but the way business is run today. These consumer strategic alliances know no geographical limitations; oftentimes, they are global in nature, particularly among the industrialized nations. As companies can get in enormous profits from the better coordination, greater product elasticity, improved quality, leaner production, and more time-based competitiveness that internet offers, they also facades the threat that can come from these consumers' strategic alliances. For instance, corporations can no longer ignore consumer demands for constant product quality, reliability and respect for the environment, or timely delivery of services. As we move toward more and more advanced technologies, the labor force must be retrained. This training must not only expose workers to the technical matters adjoining the new process but also to the new focus of the organization. They have to be made responsive of the importance of advanced technology in improving work methods and in remaining competitive. Employee compulsion to the new process is imperative.Advanced technology by itself adds little or no value to an organization. There should be organizational as well as employee dedication to exploit the techno logy to the maximum. For instance, with ever-increasing use of computer-integrated manufacturing systems, and the stream of technical documentation that accompanies it, employees have to be skilled of recognizing the critical information at the right time.Once that information is recognized and properly interpreted, there must be an organizational dedication to use the information to make better decisions. Without this potential, the organization cannot take advantage from internet.Advanced management, therefore, will persist to be a critical factor in the survival of any organization. We sum up the influence of information technology on human resources as follows:à ·Internet transforms the mode of communication and work processes.à ·Custom or standardized operations are replaced with skilled and multi-skilled workers. An extremely trained labor force is desired to manage internet.à ·Worker motivation and satisfaction might improve since workers are no longer restricted to routin e operations, enjoy management powers, and can contribute to developments in their work processes.Internet also has an impact on the organization itself, as follows:à ·Organizational reformation is required. This reformation makes the organization flat. Decision-making powers are decentralized.à ·Communications are better and the organization is capable to make timely responses to its environment.à ·Introduction of new products and services is improved and varieties of products can be efficiently introduced and marketed by the organization.à ·The organization is competent to improve its efficiency, quality, and competitiveness.Today's advanced technology can, conversely, easily become a basic technology. A rapid increase of internet also brings rapid obsolescence of earlier technologies. Policies concerning internet must not be static; they must keep evolving.
